Ms Fong is back from her maternity leave and she is now very busy attending all the presentations / training given by the level 3 HRM students to the first year students. (Just like what you have done in your final year, doing the TD module).

Ms Koh has led a team of about 60 students (HRM & ENT) to Sichuan, China in June. There were about 30+ HRM students in this trip. It's good that we have such a large group of HRM students going on the educational trip. I think they have enjoyed the trip, just like some of you who have went on the educational trip with Ms Soh last year.

Would love you to share with us and your former classmates on how you are progessing in your further studies or in your job.

There is a dance competition coming up on the 16th Dec over at Singapore Poly.. Our school is going to be taking part too.. and of course, I am too..
Tickets are going at $15 (students) and $25 (adults)..

long time since i have last been here to blog. and i realised that i miss my hr fellas!

currently, i'm picking up some hairdressing skills at the cc. and woah, it's not that simple after all. but it's fun and i love it. i just got the interest in hairdressing and styling. (: how i wish i could further my skills in japan. whee.

to miss fong: all the very best to you and your baby. and your hubby's a malay? i didn't know that. take great care yeah. you certainly need lots of tonics now. hurhur.

and i really miss that hr bbq night of fun! just think that it was awesome to gather our fellas and have fun together! good one! especially with the lecturers around. all of us became so "friends" that night. muahahaha. and yes qinhao. definitely i had FUN playing all those games throughout the night. but how FUN could it be when someone pushes you off the bed?!!! huh!!!

Hey everyone.. updates on myself and HSA.

Well.. i am finally surviving at work.. and i feel more comfortable now. My boss thinks i have improved a lot.. and i think so too. Since i am a fresh grad, i wouldn't have much experience. So, my boss tasked me to the Staffing and Recruitment portfolio.. so all contract employments in HSA are done by me.

Hee.. which also means that I'm the one to look out for when people wanna find jobs in HSA.. haha! Hey hey.. you've got a nice contact here..

Thanks Mrs Tit for your motherly concern. Yes i am fine and well. Nothing major.. I am really ok.

Jac.. i hope you are well with your baby.. 9 months may seem long.. just hang on..!

Hey everybody! Finally booked out to taste some bit of freedom after 2 weeks being confined in that miserable island. Everyday we see SIA aeroplanes flying in and out of Changi Airport and I visualise, IF ONLY it could be me on any of that flight. haha. Being in NS made me appreciate every little things that we used to take for granted from the washing machine to home cooked food. Just 2 weeks in Tekong made me miss Ngee Ann a bit... even though we study relatively lesser here (still do attend lectures on various topics like team building, first aid, national education etc) but in terms of peer-to-peers relationship, it is much more complicated in NS as being in the leadership batch and many people are trying to fight for that exclusive slots into command school, often resulting in actions that aren't very nice at times.

Anyway 2 years of my life shall now be dedicated to serving the nation (talking like this due to the national education lectures, i supposed) and the first 2 weeks had been great. Saw familiar faces here and there, saw long lost friends from secondary and primary school days and even met one of my commanders whom we used to club together!

Ms Fong, haha, you are so anxious! i think the sex of the baby still cannot be determined at 15 weeks right?

Thanks to the lecturers who had kindly helped us pay for the chalet, we had great fun playing dumb games overnight (esp Matte rite?) =)

Hi students, what are all of you doing now during the vacation? Working? playing? or sleeping most of the time?

Hope all of you who were at the BBQ sharing session have enjoyed yourselves and also learnt much from the seniors and from Mr Nazri (Ms Fong's hubby).

Thank you to everyone of you for making the function a success - organising it, preparing the food, etc and also attending the function.

I enjoyed the food and also your company when watching the Singapore Idol. So now the competition is between Hady and Jonathan. Who will win? What says you?

I'm back! Just came back from the iDARE camp in Bintan..... I did the 'flying fox' there, you wouldn't believe, would you? : )

Now, I 'owe' some of you some replies as I read the blog..... (Yes, I've been reading the blog).

1) First, thanks to the BBQ committee..... for doing such great job at the BBQ. I know you've been working hard & I certainly appreciate the 'extra miles' you've gone for your fellow cohort eg checking in early, carrying & preparing all the food, arranging the place & BBQ-ing the food for all of us.... I can see that you are also being 'BBQed'. Thanks a zillion! I have registered for your CCA points.

2) Mabelline, it's great to hear that you are learning & gaining good experience at your work. It's true that life at work & in school can be very different .... there are certainly more to work. I am sure you'll be able to overcome all difficulties. Here's a big beary hug for you..... *muck muck*

3) Deb, it's wonderful to hear from you too!! It's a pity we were not able to meet you at the BBQ. You are indeed privileged to be with PWC, and I am happy that you are learning more aspects of HR & at the same time enjoying your work. Do continue to do good work & keep us updated always. We will miss you for 1 long semester.

4) Back to the BBQ event. I hope all of you were able to enjoy yourselves at the BBQ & get to know some of the seniors. They are already in the workforce. I hope their sharing was helpful to you too. Hi all!

Sorry for being unable to turn up at the chalet..
as a form of apology, let me briefly tell you all what I've been up to all this while.

I've been on attachment to PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), a large organization - one of the big 4 accounting firms in Singapore. The work load here is ok (it's actually quite slack for now- probably to let us get use before they throw all the work at us) but I have actually learnt a lot.

The department that I'm attached to is under the Tax department.. under Human Resource Services.. dealing with global mobility. It is a totally different aspect of HR. The HR that we've studied so far deals mainly with corporate HR - HR within the organisation - and that might seem mundane and to many "just-another-load-of-paperwork". I would have to say that being in PwC has really opened my eyes as to what HR can cater for.

In doing global mobility, we actually have to do a lot of cost calculations to see how much it will cost to relocate an assignee, liasing with the assignee and our people that are on-site over at the client's office, constant updating of the database as the database can be accessed anytime, anywhere.

All in all, it's a totally different perspective of HR. Although it does feel that whatever learnt in school doesn't seem to be all that useful here, I'm glad I did pay attention.

HRMS proved to be very important! The company does not use Times HR Software but uses some other HR software that will keep track of your time - the no. of hours you do a certain task.

Training & Development is one of the main focus here - they have a unit set aside for training purposes and even a level of classrooms to accomodate trainees!

Compensation Management was useful - in relocating any assignee, you must know the compensation and benefits allocated to them (eg. difference between expatriate and one on international assignment)

Industrial Relations didn't really apply to my work scope but it aided me to know my rights and entitlements.

Therefore, although many say that whatever learnt in school and whatever practiced outside is totally different, there will definitely be some parts that are more applicable than others.. it only depends on which.

My colleagues are a friendly bunch of people and the managers are real nice as well. They're extremely helpful and warm.. I love them! :)

On a lighter note..
I'm still going back to school for dance lessons. Although it's real tiring to be rushing from work (Raffles Place) to school, I think it's worth it.. at least it's a form of relaxation after a long day of work.

We'll be starting on a new latin dance coming tue - Jive and we've done the basics for waltz the past tue.. You all are welcomed to join! If dance is something you're interested in and have a passion for, just come join us. The "seniors" (more of experience than age) are helpful and the instructors patient in teaching.. besides.. it's cheaper to take it in school than outside.. :P

Work and Worries

Updates of myself since the last week i met you guys.

My buddy mentor at work left and I am taking over her portfolio. I must say that it has been very tough. I have a tendency to assume things and think i would know the answer. Sometimes i would be a bit paiseh to ask.. and in the end i got it all wrong.

Working life is so very different from school and i am trying very hard to understand the works of it. School is informal and casual but in working life, i have to learn to adapt to the protocols and different levels of hierachy. Directors and managers are very status conscious people. I am just not used to calling DD/HR(Deputy Director), Mgr HRM and all the position names. But i have to adapt to it. No excuse.

Many a times i feel very down when i made a mistake and my boss have to cover up for me. There are so many things passed on to me and i have so many things i do not know how to do. There are tons of very short and quick deadlines to adhere to. It is definitely worse than the deadlines set by our lecturers. I am sometimes scared, so much so, i could not sleep and worry about work at times. I over-time at least 6 hours a week. But then again..more money.. haha..

Haiz..

I have learnt that it is very important to prioritise work. I have also learnt that it is very important to have a personal meeting with my supervisor every morning to discuss about the tasks given to me. My mgr is very willing to teach and help me prioritise my work. And now i have to get into the habit to ask for my managers' direction and instruction for every single task.
Really not easy.

This period is just a very difficult transitional period.

I need some consolation. May i have a pack of tissue paper please...

Ms Koh.. I need reassurance and hugs.. HELP!!

after reading aquaeccentric's entries, it really kind of made me wanting to go into the hr line. seems interesting! especially the part where he/she wrote "it really amuses me to see how people are so damn polite and 'obedient' at your presence during job interviews." similarly, i think i will feel so "wow" as well, especially when we are so much younger than the applicants. however, personally, i wil be quite reluctant to ask questions. yeah, i have to do it still. it's better than i get reprimanded for doing things wrongly. but in my own experience, sometimes it's better to figure it out myself than to ask. quite bad huh...? people do get impatient at times, even before we ask a single question and they get annoyed. of course, not all are like this. there are still nice colleagues around. or maybe, we could just approach others for help. don't worry, be happy. =)

am really looking forward to the hr bbq! see all of you guys there! Ciaos.

Working life is mad. You get scolded. So much to do and so little time.. Bloody overtime always.

But well.. nevertheless, it has been a good working experience. HR can be quite interesting. Yes.. all of you may complain that there is a lot shit HR theory to study..

Internal equity, external competitiveness, merit pay, avc.. and all the blah blah blah theory.. i never thought what i have studied would be so applicable to work. Suddenly, what i learn in school comes to life.

Well.. the most interesting part of HR for me is meeting applicants of all walks of life.. fat, old, skinny, handsome, pretty, ang mo and what not.. all shapes, sizes and types. It really amuses me to see how people are so damn polite and 'obedient' at your presence during job interviews. Haha..

I feel weird interviewing older workers.. cos i am so young.. and they are as old as my mother.. they are just ordinary folks like you and i.. i feel sad when they take time to come for interviews and are rejected as unqualified applicants.

But well, for this one week, i have seen and learnt a lot... and well.. more to come. Thankfully, i have a supportive boss and buddy to guide me. Everyday is a learning experience.

Surviving the First day of Work.

Welcome to the Real World.

My First day of work is good.. But there is lots to learn.. Everything there is just different from school. Each org has its own policies and processes.. it's an environment different from School. Thankfully, my colleagues are a supportive bunch and they dun pressure me to learn fast.

School is all about theory, projects, presentation and exams. But working life is all so very different. There is a lot of tacit knowledge at work. And i feel like starting all over again from point zero.

Eating the Humble Pie
The above says it all- eating the humble pie. Isn't that the way to survive in a organisation when you are new? Let me explore some of the do and don'ts when starting out in a job. Lecturers please join and add in your experience!

1. Eat the humble pie- You are the lowest of all in the orgaisation. So be humble, NEVER think you know it all.
2. LEARN! Take positve attitude in learning and record anything you learn. Process and apply what you learn.
3. Listen more. Talk Less. Nod, Smile and NEVER COMMENT any thing bad about the organisation.
4. Be friendly but not too friendly. It takes time to build relationships.. take it slowly.
5. ASK. Never be afraid to ask anything you find peculiar or things you don't know. Colleagues are more than willing to help.. if you ASK! After all, you are in the organisation to learn.

Lecturers.. and friends add in your suggestions!

Be more conscientious in your work attitude & listen more than you speak. Never spurt out any 'expletives'.

Health Sciences Authority

I got a job offer! Yay!

Wah so lucky.. got job offer! Heh heh!

As many you know, i have been hunting for jobs. And well, after a month of sending out resumes, i got a job offer from HSA. It hasn't been easy finding jobs. Along the way, i have met 'funny funny' employers. There was one employer who interviewed me for a different position, another who gave me super tough questions and made me feel so small.

There was also one manager of a company who had arrogant attitude and think she is some BIG SHOT in the company. Anyway, the company is located in Xerox Fuji Towers. The company is dealing with insurance. Man..that interview really pissed me off. Most importantly, i felt the company was a bit fishy. The employees were all very young, meaning all less than 35 years old. The managers wear casual wear to work! I haven't seen any organisation that disallows employees to wear 3/4 pants. I got a feeling i wouldn't like the culture there. That company didn't reflect a learning and nurturing culture.

So looking at the manager's shitty looking face, i told her straight in the face..."I DON'T WISH TO WASTE MY TIME BEING INTERVIEWED." That arrogant manager replied me with that shitty arrogant face.. "I DON'T WISH TO WASTE MY TIME INTERVIEWING YOU TOO" and left the interviewing room. How diligent.

But really, i feel employees working there don't stay for long. No point. I don't regret what i said to that manager.

HSA was different. I got the job through a job agency.

HSA is a statutory board. So a few things in a stat board are sure gauranteed.

1. Learning and nurturing culture. Stat boards are supposed to have People Developer Accreditation.

2. Match policy pay.

3. Nice working environment.

4. Opportunities for training and development.

How the interview went? Wanna know?

Well, it is a 6 months contract position for management support officer(Human Resource Department). Of which after completing the 6 months contract, i could be considered a Permanent Contract staff for 3 years.

The interviewer gave me a set of questions and i had to pick one question. I was to write an essay. I chose the question.."why do you need a HRM function in an organisation".. Wah! That question looked like the first question in the first tutorial of SHRM. Haha!

I completed it and the interviewer came in later. She was impressed with my standard of written english. She later mentioned that the essay test was used to test my profiency of written english. The position was needed someone who could write letters. No wonder..

She told me about the scope of the job. And well, it covers all aspects of HR. Sounds good to me!

I will have opportunities to be groomed. Sounds good! Pay is market rate! Not too bad! I have will have opportunities to be part of the shared services project. Nice! NDC is next door! Man.. i could go for braces appointment without taking leave! And the best part... I could take a maximum of 3 weeks leave once i finish my 6 months contract work and come back to work again! SIBEI STEADY!

So it was all good.

And yes.. Rajiv miniskirt poem is corny.. haha! As usual.

Yes, the BBQ is really 'heating' up, literally. Thanks Abidah, who had kindly helped us booked the chalet for 7-8th September. (Staying overnight is optional.)

The committe members are also starting to carry out various plannings, doing their part to make this BBQ a blazing success.

Hi Everyone!
After meeting up, we shall now proudly present to you the committee members of the Good Luck BBQ specially organised for all HRM students!

1) Currently, we need a volunteer to be an 'official photographer' for the event. We are looking for 1 to 2 photographers to capture the exciting moments during the BBQ.

2) The treasurers will start to collect $8 from all individuals for the BBQ Funds from tomorrow officially (26/7)

3) Should anyone have any specific requests, they can look for relevant IC anytime.

4) Current date we are looking at for the BBQ is the first week of September. Watch this space for further details once they are confirmed!

haha.. well..
finally all the group project submission is finish..
left with HRMS, IR, TD and comp presentation for most of us ba..
what a stressful semester that we have..
so everyone should join in the fun at the chalet..
though the chalet is onli one day..
but at least it is a stress releasing event..
everyone can relaz and have fun together..
spend some time together before the final semester start again..
and also to spend time with other who will be going for attachment soon..
it has being a fun and joyful sem and do hope that next sem will be more fun..
exam coming in less than one month time..
everyone must jia you and study hard for it..
dun let the effort that we put in go into the drain..
yeah...
play hard and study hard at the same time..

For this BBQ, we need to have it either on one of these dates 11 Sep--> 14 Sep and 18 Sep--> 21 Sep. I am not too sure if the Ghost month has ended. We can't have it after 22 Sep as fasting month starts on the 23 Sep. Also, these dates that i have stated are all off peak period, so it will be much, much cleaper. I need someone to check it out when the Ghost month ends. For those who cannot or somehow got other problems about the dates, pls let us know asap so we can work out a date and can go on to do the booking already. -Abidah-

About him:

- he was also from boys school for 10 years

- he is the only child of the family

- he can eat a lot and must have supper every night

- other than playing pool, he likes to drink only cos he got no time to do other things :)

- he started playing pool at the age of 13

- and he became a national player soon after that

Something Impressive ????

So are you wondering how he can become a national player at such a young age??

- after playing pool for 3 months only, he took part in a competition

- although he only played for a few months, he even won the national player who took part

- so, he was spotted as a potential talent

- from then on, he became a national player

- after training for a year or so, he offically took part in competitions overseas

- from then till now, he had already played pool for 5 years ( isn't that very long???)

- for this 5 years, he had a lot of achievements and had traveled quite a lot

- of cos he himself did not expect to become a national player, but he did have a lot of fun

Oh, so Vandol is Michael? Alrights, we will probably have the BBQ on the first week of September. Cause this can also be served as the so-called farewell party for those going for OIAP. We will discuss it further after our very hectic schedule! Projects and stuffs are killing us. :(

As for your request for more hotdogs and crabsticks, I shall grant you your wish. LOL! Make sure you finish them all ar. And Ms Koh, you sure you want a bite of his exotic pets? Haha. Maybe it will taste good... :))

- He is a blackbelt-don 2. (the highest level of black belt is level 9. Master is level 4!)
- He happen to joined tht 6 yr back becuz of his brother. His brother need accompany.
- He is a licenced instructor. Teaching takewando in CC to those rank are lower than him.
- He is currently learning kickboxing now!

Something Personal...
He was in a boy school for 10 years.
He has alot of guy fren la but not in BS.
He felt that sec skol more relax and easy going not like in poly ppl tend to stero type and etc.
His sleeping tactics is a talent. He reveal his secret to his sleeping tactics-maintain posture dun lie dwn.
He usually wake up 545am -6am in the morning when school start at 9. Play PS 2 ar!
